LAMMICO Returns $2.6 Million

According to the DailyReporter, Louisiana’s largest medical malpractice insurer, LAMMICO, will return 5 percent of its premiums to more than 6,700 policyholders across nearly a dozen states. That amounts to $2.6 million. Nearly 95 percent of those receiving a return work and reside in Louisiana.

Policyholders will receive their refund during the first quarter. This is the eighth time the company has paid dividends since 2008. Counting the current refund, LAMMICO has returned $45 million in dividends to policyholders.

High-School Football Player Sues for Medical Malpractice After Improper Diagnosis

Louisiana Record reports on a case involving a local hospital and a high-school football player who sustained injuries during a game. The patient contends that he was playing football early last season when three players on the opposing team tackled him, injuring his leg and head. He claims that upon arriving at the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a hip contusion, which limited the range of motion in his entire leg. They also diagnosed him with a concussion.

According to the plaintiff, doctors discharged him from the hospital with crutches and pain medication. He claims he visited a different medical center the following day because of pain in his abdomen and testicle, as well as nausea. Doctors diagnosed him with a contusion to his testicle and discharged him; however, the plaintiff experienced excessive pain the next day and returned to the second medical center for doctors to discover that the football injury had cut off blood flow to his testicle due to a twisted vein.

Because the condition had lasted for three days, the testicle had become necrotic, and there was no way to regain proper function. The defendant is suing both medical centers and their staff for failing to render proper medical treatment, as well as failing to properly diagnose, failing to ensure hospital staff followed predetermined guidelines, dialing to staff facilities with competent employees and failing to examine the genital area of the plaintiff.
