Work-related burnout is a serious problem among healthcare providers, and it can have devastating consequences for patients. When a physician works long hours and takes few breaks to rest or even eat, the risk of committing a medical error increases.

If your physician is clearly lethargic, you would probably refuse to undergo a procedure, but the signs of drowsiness are not always obvious. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation has effects on the body that are similar to those of alcohol.

In fact, the National Sleep Foundation reports that remaining awake for 18 hours straight impairs the body in the same way that having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 does. If you are awake for 24 hours straight, your ability to focus will be similar to that of a person with a BAC of 0.10.

If you sustained serious injuries or an illness after receiving negligent care, contact The Bowling Christiansen Law Firm. David A. Bowling is a medical malpractice lawyer in New Orleans who will evaluate your circumstances, gather evidence, and help you fight for the maximum compensation. Which Medical Specialties Have the Highest Rates of Burnout?

All medical providers are susceptible to burnout; however, researchers have found that individuals in some specialties are more vulnerable than those in others. The American Medical Association reports that work-related burnout has increased across all specialties in recent years.

In a 2011 survey of 6,880 physicians, approximately 45 percent of respondents met the criteria for burnout. In the follow-up survey conducted three years later, more than 54 percent of respondents reported experiencing at least one symptom of burnout.

Researchers assessed the physicians using questions from the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and they observed that there was substantial variation in the specific rates of burnout among different specialties. Unsurprisingly, the specialties with the highest rates of burnout were those at the front line regarding access to care.

In 2014, 63 percent of family medicine practitioners reported one or more symptoms of burnout, as did 46.3 percent of general pediatric physicians, 63.6 percent of urologists, 59.6 percent of orthopedic surgeons, and 56.5 percent of dermatologists. Researchers noted that there was also substantial variation among physicians at different stages of their career, and the highest rate of burnout was among mid-career practitioners who already had extensive experience in their field.

When physicians are suffering from burnout, which is characterized by lethargy, negative thoughts regarding work, and a general sense of dissatisfaction, it can have devastating effects on their patients. If you received substandard care from a negligent physician and sustained serious injuries as a result, turn to The Bowling Christiansen Law Firm for comprehensive legal guidance.
