Sepsis is a condition in which an infection overwhelms an individual’s immune system. There are multiple signs that can indicate a state of sepsis, including increased heart rate, low blood pressure, fever, increased white blood count and positive blood cultures. Diagnosing an individual with sepsis and prompt treatment is imperative to an individual’s ability to survive the deadly infection. Louisiana residents may be interested in one woman’s medical malpractice case that was recently settled with a physician. The woman claimed in the lawsuit that her husband died due to lack of information that could have saved his life.

The lawsuit claims that the woman’s 55-year-old husband sought the care of a physician for severe knee pain. According to the hospital and physician, there were no signs of sepsis at the time of examination. At some point, blood tests were drawn as part of the evaluation of the man’s symptoms. The hospital physician claims to have alerted the patient of his need to seek immediate care in the emergency room for the infection, but the patient refused for financial reasons.

The plaintiff’s lawyer countered the hospital’s claims, stating that there was no notification of the blood test conFirming infection. Furthermore, the patient’s wife claims that the husband was never told to seek care. Sadly, he died from the infection, and the woman filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit will not proceed to trial because both parties decided to settle the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.

It is certainly difficult to lose a loved one unexpectedly, especially when earlier medical intervention might have prevented a death. Louisiana medical malpractice attorneys understand that there are multiple adjustments following the death of a loved one, including financial. Some families may find a wrongful death lawsuit to be the right option to help cover unexpected medical and burial expenses.
