Veteran’s family files suit for hospital negligence
June 8th, 2017A veteran’s children have filed a suit for wrongful death against a VA clinic. The three plaintiffs feel that hospital negligence was responsible for their father’s death. The man, who was an armorer in the U.S. Navy between the years of 1960 and 1964, was a veteran of the Vietnam War and, after retiring from the military, opened his own charter sailing company. Medical malpractice is a daily issue in the state of Louisiana, causing many deaths and injuries each year.
The veteran had entered the VA clinic in Feb. 2016 in order to undergo a series of surgeries for a condition with which he had been diagnosed. After the first operation, however, he suffered a heart attack, and his doctors determined that he was unable to withstand further procedures. In April of that same year, the man died one week after an incident occurred in his hospital room that caused him to fall. Complications from a traumatic head injury were blamed for the death.
The plaintiffs in the case claim that the Vietnam veteran was left unattended in his chair, with no restraints to keep him from falling. At the time of the incident, he was being fed through several tubes, had a gangrenous foot from lack of circulation and had to fully depend on the hospital staff for every aspect of his daily care. He also had been put on blood thinners, which increased his risk of fatal injury if he fell. His children feel that a man in his condition should have never been left propped up in a chair alone in a room unless he was at least restrained to prevent an accident.
Hospital negligence claims the lives of hundreds of veterans and others every year in the U.S. Residents of Louisiana who have suffered injury themselves, or had a loved one who was hurt or died because of this issue, have the right to contact a personal injury attorney. These lawyers are knowledgeable in the laws regarding medical malpractice and can advise their clients on how to proceed with their claim.
