Reducing noise during procedures may help lessen surgical errors

Facing a surgical procedure, whether through an elective operation or emergency surgery, usually induces apprehension in most patients. It may only add to a patient’s anxiety levels if he or she stops to consider the possibility of becoming a victim of surgical errors . While the majority of Louisiana patients will experience a routine procedure and an uneventful recovery, there are some who may not be as fortunate.

Recently, professionals in the medical field offered some suggestions that may be effective in reducing the number of mistakes that are made during operations. It is believed that a major contributor to errors is the level of noise distractions during these procedures. Several tips were offered that may help restore some measure of tranquility during these delicate operations. The first of which suggested that surgery staff adhere to a policy that limits conversation to the essentials, especially during complicated aspects of the surgery.

Two other tips were to take measurements of the volume of sound during operations and to ensure that all support staff are aware of the effect that noise can have on both staff and patients during these times. Other suggestions were to switch to quieter equipment when possible and to handle implements in a manner that prevents loud, metallic sounds. It was also suggested that physicians and support staff undergo simulation exercises to gauge how they react to different settings and disruptions in order to sharpen concentration skills where needed.

Lastly, the use of simulations to gauge the effectiveness of noise-reduction plans may aid staff to help eliminate unnecessary disruptions. Anything that can be done to improve the quality of health care for Louisiana patients is a worthwhile endeavor. However, there are no assurances that a physician or other medical provider will not make an error in judgment or engage in negligent behavior that results in a patient suffering harm from serious surgical errors or malpractice. While there are no quick cures to relieve the physical pain that these errors cause, a medical malpractice claim may result in compensation for the monetary losses that may have been incurred.
