Woman awarded $2.4 million after birth injury

When an injury occurs during the childbirth process, people in Louisiana may assume that the damage only occurs for the child. While there are several health risks for a baby, mothers can also suffer a birth injury. Recently, a jury issued a verdict in favor of a mother who claims to have suffered unnecessary harm due to the care of her obstetrician, and she was awarded $2.4 million.

During childbirth, the mother suffered a rare uterine rupture. A uterine rupture places both the mother and baby at risk for complications and/or death. According to the lawsuit and medical records, the woman underwent five different surgeries in the 24 hours following the birth of her child in the attempt to stop her bleeding. The fourth surgery resulted in the complete removal of her uterus in order to stop the bleeding.

According to the lawsuit, the fifth surgery was completed to repair some damage caused by the other surgeries and was completed by a different surgeon. Following the birth, the woman filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the physician, and she was recently awarded $2.4 million for her pain and suffering. It was not clear if it was related to this woman's case or due to other reasons, but the doctor's privileges were suspended by the hospital earlier this year.

In addition to dealing with the physical pain and discomfort a birth injury may cause, recovering from an injury may result in missed moments shared with a family and a newborn. Medical expenses plus the expenses of a new baby can result in a financial burden for young families. Medical malpractice attorneys in Louisiana are experienced with delicate birth injury cases, and some cases may be suitable to file a lawsuit in civil court.
