Watching reality television has become a favorite pass time in many Louisiana homes. There seems to be a reality show for nearly any type of interest, including celebrities, survival shows, extreme weight loss programs or botched surgeries. Some of the individuals, especially doctors or other frequently sought professionals, become so well known that people seek their services outside of the show. A surgeon who was made famous for performing life-saving weight-loss surgeries on My 600-lb Life has recently been sued for medical malpractice after a piece of metal and tubing was found inside of one of his former patients.

The items found inside of the patient were left behind when she underwent surgery to remove the gastric banding and port used in gastric bypass surgery as well as repair a hiatal hernia. However, in the days after her surgery, the patient continued to experience pain and pressure in her abdomen that was not typical of post-operative pain. Eventually, the pain became so intense that the patient went to an emergency room.

At the emergency room, a CT scan and pelvic ultrasound were performed. These tests revealed the foreign objects in the patient’s abdominal cavity. After discussing the removal of the objects and her treatment options, the patient decided to sue the reality TV doctor for his failure to completely remove the objects during the initial surgery. The exact amount sought by the plaintiff is not known, but she cites the physical pain she suffered because of the objects as well as the additional surgery required to remove those objects in her malpractice claim.

Objects left inside of patients after surgery can cause a variety of complications. Some patients might experience only mild discomfort, while others might experience crippling pain. In some cases, mistakes like this can result in long-term damage and result in the patient being forced to undergo additional treatments. Louisiana residents who believe that they have suffered injuries due to a doctors negligence and wish to file a medical malpractice suit may wish to speak with an attorney in their area. Patients may be entitled to compensation for pain an suffering or for the cost of additional medical procedures or treatments.
