Surgical errors result in lawsuit

December 12th, 2017
On behalf of David Bowling of The Bowling Christiansen Law Firm, A Professional Law Corporation posted in Surgical Errors on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

When a patient goes into surgery, he or she is trusting the doctor to perform the procedure with the utmost care and professionalism. Unfortunately, as some Louisiana residents may know, it is possible for doctors to make mistakes, and those mistakes have the potential to cause long-term problems for the patient. The situation can also be made worse when the doctor attempts to hide surgical errors from the patient.

A woman in Delaware has filed a lawsuit claiming that her doctor mistakenly removed the wrong part of her thyroid and then conspired to cover up the error. The right side of the patient’s thyroid was diagnosed as potentially cancerous, and an endocrinologist recommended that it be removed. However, when it came time for the surgery to be performed, the doctors had the left side of her thyroid slated for removal.

The patient voiced her concerns and informed her doctors that she believed a mistake had been made. After the patient voiced her concerns, the doctor informed her that she was incorrect and proceeded to remove the left portion of her thyroid. In the three years since the surgery, the woman has continued to suffer from dizziness and changes in her voice.

Louisiana residents who, like this plaintiff, have suffered injuries or hardships which are a direct result of surgical errors could benefit from consulting with an attorney. The injuries, hardships or deaths resulting from medical malpractice may entitle patients or their families to compensation. This compensation may be used to pay for unexpected medical bills, long-term medical costs, loss of income or funeral costs, when needed.
