Man Claims Walgreens Sold Him the Wrong Medication

According to the Louisiana Record, a man is filing a medical malpractice lawsuit after staff at a New Orleans Walgreens allegedly gave him the wrong medication. The man claims he went to the pharmacy in question to fill three prescriptions in April 2016.

His lawsuit states that the pharmacy filled two of the prescriptions correctly but gave him the wrong medication for the third. The plaintiff claims the medication he actually received in place of the medication he was supposed to receive caused hallucinations and racing thoughts. While under the drug's influence, the man claims he fell and required hospitalization for his injuries.

The plaintiff is accusing Walgreens of medical malpractice through the pharmacy's alleged negligence, failure to fulfill his prescription properly, and breach of their duty of care. He is seeking appropriate relief, court costs, attorney fees, and all reasonable damages.

Unfortunately, pharmacy errors are more common than most people realize. According to CNN, of the 3 billion prescriptions that outpatient pharmacies fill annually, 30 million dispensing errors occur.

How Can I Protect Myself from Pharmacy Errors?

The most effective way to reduce the risk of falling victim to medical malpractice is by taking a proactive approach to your healthcare. Doctors and pharmacists may be intimidating, but if you have questions or concerns regarding a diagnosis or treatment approach, do not be afraid to voice them.

When it comes to pharmacy errors in particular, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of taking the wrong medication or taking the right medication incorrectly. For example, you should always give yourself plenty of time when filling a prescription.

If you are in a rush, you may not stop to confirm that the pharmacist gave you the correct medication; however, this is the single most important step you can take to protect yourself from complications that could arise by taking the wrong medication.

Open your prescription before you even leave the pharmacy, and make sure it matches what the doctor prescribed. If you cannot remember what the doctor said, look up the medication that the pharmacist gave you on your smartphone to confirm its purpose.

This step could save you from severe complications down the road. For example, if your doctor prescribed Materna, which is a prenatal vitamin, but the pharmacist gave you Matulane, which a quick Google search will reveal is a chemotherapy drug, the repercussions could be devastating.

Sadly, even the most vigilant patients can fall victim to prescription errors. If you or a member of your family was a victim of medical malpractice, contact The Bowling Law Firm to discuss your case.
