Patient’s suffer as a result of surgeon’s medical malpractice

When Louisiana surgeons operate on patients, they are expected to adhere to set standards established by their own medical profession. Any deviation from proper procedure can lead to unnecessary harm and injury to a patient. Recently, in a nearby state, an administrative judge concluded that a plastic surgeon committed medical malpractice. The victims feel the judge’s order is the first step for some legal justice for their physical and emotional injuries.

In 2015, twice in one day, the surgeon injured two different women with an improper surgical technique. Both women received a cosmetic Brazilian Butt Lift where the surgeon removed fat by liposuction from their abdomen and placed it in their buttocks. One of the women was discharged home but continued to suffer severe pain. An exploratory surgery would later reveal that the plastic surgeon had punctured her liver and damaged other organs during her cosmetic surgery.

The second woman’s injury was more severe. During her Brazilian Butt Lift, the surgeon punctured her colon making her extremely ill. She spent 28 days in a coma and endured intense physical therapy in an attempt to recover. The woman’s mother testified to the judge that the physician confessed to her that the patient’s injury was likely a result of a mistake he made during her lift.

Although the judge’s order did not prevent the doctor from continuing to practice medicine, it will be reviewed by the state’s medical board when considering his discipline. The order may also aide with establishment of negligence if the victims choose to pursue a medical malpractice claim in civil court. Louisiana patients that have endured unnecessary and extended medical care as the result of a surgical mistake may be eligible for compensation to help cover the cost of unbudgeted medical and physical therapy bills. A surgical mistake can further compound financial stress if it results with missed time at work and lost income.
