What Are the Different Kinds of Spinal Cord Injuries – and How Do You Know If You Have One?

Spinal cord injuries are defined by their degree of severity, and how serious they are will depend on the area affected. Generally, injuries that are higher up around the neck affect a larger area of the body than damage to lower areas.

The three most common categories of spinal cord injuries are:

Quadriplegia: Characterized bymuscle weakness in the arms and legs;

Paraplegia: Resulting in a loss of sensation from the waist down;

And tetraplegia: Involving inhibited mobility in one arm and both legs.

After any accident, it is crucial that you check for signs of a possible spinal cord injury straight away. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, these are all signs to look out for:

Severe pain or pressure in the head, neck or back;

A tingling sensation in the extremities such as hands, fingers, feet or toes;

Loss of control over any part of the body;

Abnormal urinary or bowel urgency or incontinence;

Serious difficulty with balance, especially while walking;

Unusual pain or pressure in the thorax;

Impaired breathing;

Or any unusual lumps on the head or along the spine.
