Couple Seeking Damages for Delayed Diagnosis

According to the Louisiana Record, a couple is suing an urgent care center after staff allegedly failed to diagnose the husband with atrial fibrillation within a reasonable amount of time. The couple is claiming that the urgent care center breached its duty of care by failing to mention that the patient could be suffering from cardiac issues after he presented symptoms of muscle weakness, fatigue, cough, sinus pressure, and poor appetite.

The providers at the urgent care center administered medication to treat the symptoms but allegedly did not explore possible cardiac issues. Less than two weeks later, the man was hospitalized.

He was placed in intensive care for three days and was discovered to have been experiencing atrial fibrillation for more than 200 hours. The couple is arguing that the man underwent unbearable stress as a direct result of the substandard care he received at the urgent care center.

The plaintiffs are accusing the defendant of breaching its duty of care, failing to treat the patient in a reasonable and timely fashion, and failing to identify what was wrong with him. They are seeking compensation for the damages they sustained, as well as for all associated court costs and attorneys' fees.

What Conditions Do Doctors Often Misdiagnose?

Despite advancements in medical science, misdiagnoses are alarmingly common; however, just because your doctor's initial diagnosis was incorrect does not necessarily mean that you were a victim of medical malpractice. In order for your claim to be successful, you must be able to prove that a medical worker with the same specialization would have delivered an accurate diagnosis in the same situation.

In some cases, a delayed or inaccurate diagnosis can have serious and even life-threatening consequences. According to CNN, some of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions are:

      Irritable bowel syndrome;

      Celiac disease;

      Fibromyalgia;

      Rheumatoid arthritis;

      Multiple sclerosis;

      Lyme disease;

      Lupus;

      Polycystic ovary syndrome;

      Appendicitis; and

      Endometriosis.

These conditions can worsen over time if left untreated. Depending on the situation, prescribing the wrong treatment can cause adverse side effects.

You can reduce the risk of being misdiagnosed by getting a second opinion from another healthcare provider. Unfortunately, even the most proactive patients can still suffer from medical negligence.

If you received an inaccurate or delayed diagnosis, a medical malpractice lawyer from The Bowling Law Firm can help you pursue compensation for any damages that you incurred as a result.
